Coding Changes for 2021 – What You Need to Know

Dec 9, 2020 | Events

By now you have likely heard about the numerous changes to the 2021 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set which will take effect on January 1, 2021. These include changes to the code set for office and other outpatient evaluation and management (E/M) services (e.g., 99203, 99213), as well as code sets that are important for pediatrics. The changes will impact codes 99201-99215. Some of the changes include:

  • Code 99201 will be deleted.
  • History and physical exam no longer will be considered when selecting a code (yet they still are important to document).
  • Code selection will be based on either medical decision-making (MDM) or total time.
  • New MDM tables will be published in CPT but still refer to three elements: problems addressed, data to be reviewed and analyzed, and risk.
  • Time will include “all time on the date of encounter” (including non-face-to-face), and code time ranges (rather than “typical” times) will be published.
  • New prolonged service code will be added for highest level office or other outpatient E/M services only with new threshold time.

During this 90-minute session hosted by the Pediatric Council of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (“FCAAP”), David Morris Kanter, MD, MBA, CPC, FAAP – AAP Committee on Coding and Nomenclature, will review the changes and how to incorporate them into your practice. The session will include time for live Q&A with Dr. Kanter to help ensure you understand the changes and what you need to do with them.

Registration is free and limited to current members of FCAAP. All attendees will receive a free, web-based E&M Medical Decision-Making Calculator and an Office Visits Level of Medical Decision-Making Table with the CPT code changes at the end of the presentation.

Members can register by visiting the Member Benefits page of the Members Only website. Non-Members register after joining FCAAP. Membership information is available online or by contacting Melanie Range at 850-224-3939 or mrange@fcaap.org.
